All about Muzzy Lane

Muzzy Lane Software is located in Newburyport, MA, a historic seaport about an hour northeast of Boston. The company was founded in 2002 with a focus on creating a uniquely rich and detailed strategy game for learning and teaching history: the Making History game.

Making History has been used in hundreds of classrooms, and the company's experience working with schools, teachers, and students led to the decision to develop the Sandstone platform, with the goal of making it easier and more cost-effective to deploy learning-games in schools and classrooms.

Our projects have expanded beyond History to include Science, Language-learning, Health-education, Business, and Urban Planning - to give a partial list. Our experienced designers work with subject-matter experts in each area, following an effective process to integrate learning and practice objectives with engaging gameplay.

The Making History game also proved its worth beyond education, becoming a successful commercial strategy game series. In 2010, the company partnered with economic historian and Muzzy Lane adviser Niall Ferguson to produce "Making History II: The War of the World", inspired by Professor Ferguson's bestselling book on 20th century conflict. Future plans include bringing the Making History formula to other historical periods and enhancing the web connected multiplayer gameplay that represents a dramatic improvement in the way strategy gamers can experience multiplayer.

Muzzy Lane has won multiple awards for our work, including I/ITSEC's Serious Games Challenge, Corporation for Public Broadcasting's American History and Civics Initiative, and grants from DARPA, NEH and NIDA.

In January 2011, the company moved to a new home in the Towle Building in Newburyport, which offers more space for Muzzy Lane's talented team of designers, engineers, and artists, and a roof deck overlooking the mighty Merrimack River.
